EDISON, New Jersey (WABC) — Several people were injured, including two who are in critical condition, after a fire broke out at a senior center in Edison, New Jersey on Tuesday, according to officials.
Edison Mayor Sam Joshi said Edison, South Brunswick and Metuchen fire departments responded to the four-alarm fire at Menlo Manor, a senior living community located at 1061 Inman Ave.
Crews worked to evacuate the building, which contains five floors and 240 apartments.
NewsCopter 7 was over the scene, capturing footage of burnt out apartments, numerous busted windows and seniors being escorted to safety.
Edison officials say there were 10 injuries in total. Two of the victims, a man and woman from the apartment where the fire broke out, are in critical condition. Eight others were being treated for smoke inhalation.
Mayor Joshi initially said one person was killed, but officials clarified that doctors were able to revive the victim who was rushed to the hospital with no vitals.
As for the building, the entire facility has been evacuated for the night. Even though only one of the four wings is technically uninhabitable, firefighters are unable to reset the fire alarms, meaning the other three wings can’t be occupied, leaving more than 200 residents displaced.
The American Red Cross is at the scene, and Edison Township is fronting the bill to put any displaced residents in hotels.
There’s no word yet on the cause of the fire.
